Women residing in the 'chars' (riverine islands) of Gaibandha district have been using the ‘sack gardening’ method for cultivating ginger. This protects the crop from flooding and other weather extremes, and also helps prevent pest infestation. They are now earning a revenue that is nearly tenfold compared to costs. The success of this initiative is inspiring other farmers in the area to adopt the method. To further promote this practice, an NGO called Friendship has distributed 20,000 sacks across 240 households in the area.
